Short answer: Low-E coating is worth it almost everywhere for the comfort difference alone, but the energy-bill payback period depends heavily on your climate and how much direct sun your windows get.

What it actually does

A microscopically thin coating reflects infrared light, keeping heat out in summer and in during winter, without meaningfully affecting visible light or view clarity.

Where it pays off fastest

South and west-facing windows with lots of direct sun see the biggest comfort and cooling-cost benefit. North-facing windows see a smaller, but still real, benefit.
